Hazel Grace is an author of many talents when it comes to her writing, she never just sticks to the one genre, she always goes out of her way to try and prove to herself that she can write whatever she puts her mind too. Most of her books always tend to be pretty twisted, dark and have some sort of surprise in store, yet this time round she has gone ahead and completely shocked us all as she’s gone ahead and written a sweet contemporary book, but it’s still got Hazel’s twist in to show that it’s something of hers.
This is so different from all of Hazel’s previous work, but it’s well worth the read and it also highlights how talented she is.
I thought this was such a heart-breaking book, the characters were pretty awesome that you couldn’t help but fall in love with, even though at times you just wanted to go ahead and bang their heads together.
I loved how Cal and Laynee’s friendship stood the test of time as they were growing up, even though they lived miles apart, they still kept in touch and looked forward to them both being able to see each other when summer arrived.
I honestly couldn’t stand Laynee’s mom, she was just one of those types of characters that you can’t help but want to punch. I found her to be pretty cruel towards her own daughter and that she would do anything to try and keep her away from Cal. I could understand if Laynee was causing trouble or was causing problems for the family, but honestly she was such a good girl and did everything she could so that she was able to finish school. But I do love how Hazel wrote her mom even if I couldn’t stand her, yet again Hazel has such a way with her words that she knows how to draw her readers in.
I honestly was gripped to the story from the very first page, but then again Hazel has a way of capturing her readers attention and pulling them into her stories.
I really can’t fault this story, I just loved it, don’t get me wrong I would have wished a couple of things turned out differently and that Laynee was able to actually spend more time with Cal once they finished school, but I know that sometimes things don’t always work in the way that you want them too.
I’d recommend giving this a try because it has everything you could ask for in a book, amazing characters, great chemistry, drama. You honestly couldn’t ask for more.
Laynee loves spending her summers at her parents cabin, she loves just getting to sit there, be away from everyone and just do her own thing, but the one thing she detests is being anywhere near her mother. They don’t exactly have the best relationship and if Laynee can help it, she will avoid her at all costs.
Everything is as it seems, but one thing is different this summer and that she gets disturbed by this random guy, who is the same age as her. Not wanting the chance to possible get hurt, she does all that she can to get him to leave her alone, but clearly this guy doesn’t get the memo… As the next day he comes back and Laynee can’t seem to get rid of him, but what she doesn’t realise is that her summer is about to change in a way she never expected.
After becoming attached at the hip and with Cal understanding Laynee’s need to get away from her mom, they build such a bond that not a lot of people like, especially Laynee’s mother. Yet they are determined to not let anything break them apart.
With plans of their own and their bond getting stronger each summer, they both can’t wait until they finish school and get to be together at the college of their choices, but for some reason Cal never turns up and never arrives at the airport where Laynee is waiting for him.
Will Cal ever tell her why he vanished and never turned up? What happens when they both reveal their own secrets to each other?? And how will things progress when years later they meet again when things get tricky for them? Will Cal ever get the chance to fix things and get the girl of his dreams????
