I fell in love with this book as soon as I read Emily's version and I couldn't wait to read from Jake's perspective. The way that this story brings you in is honestly amazing, as I was reading it, I felt like I was actually there as the character's themselves.
Jake Reid is a 30 year old heart surgeon doctor and ever since he got out of college he has been playing the field but even though he had one long term relationship years ago he still feelings that he needs to find the one.
After such a long shift at the hospital he decides to head to the grocery store at midnight as he is hungry and hasn't actually eaten much during the day but when he gets there the last thing he was expecting was to meet the perfect women. After standing there watching her because he finds the fact that she is out at midnight looking at cereal boxes, which he can't help but find amusing she ends up falling over in the aisle and knocking both of them. This is when Jake realises that this is his chance to attempt to spend a little bit of time with her and to get to know more about her, and after much protesting from her saying that she'll manage somehow to walk he ends up picking her up and taking her to the hospital.
For some reason Jake suddenly seems very protective of her and learns that her name is Emily, as he looks into her eyes he can't help but notice that there is a sadness glinting in them. He has a feeling that there has been some hurt in her past and all he wants to do is put things right and make her happy. Whilst they are at the hospital they end up bonding a little and once Jake bandages up her ankle he takes her back to her car and asks her for a chance to take her out to dinner, but even though she doesn't exactly say no and gives him a maybe he can't help but feel giddy inside.
As soon as he heads over to his parents house he still hasn't managed to get the image of Emily out of his head and for some reason he already seems to know that Emily is the one for him even though he hardly knows her. As soon as it's 8:00 am he can't help it but call her as he can't shake her from his memory, he feels bad when he finds out that he woke up but he is thrilled that she hasn't stopped thinking of him. He decides to head over and check on her ankle before heading to work and they both can't work out why she seems to be really trusting with him as she lets him have her keys so that he doesn't keep making her get up on her bad ankle. They arrange to have dinner later that night when he finishes work and when he gets there he notices that the only thing that she's done that day is change from her pyjamas into some other clothes. They end up heading out to have a meal but just before their food arrives Jake's pager goes off and he is needed back at the hospital, he feels really bad having to cut their date short so when he does drive her home before heading back to work he mentions that he is going to make it up to her and that they will arrange another time to go out.
After a few weeks of having to start dates off and then having to be called back into work both Emily and Jake are realising that they miss being apart from each other and attempt to find time that suits both of them. After one of the times that they both head to a meal with Emily's friends Charlie and Sarah, he is surprised by the way her friends are as they both aren't sure what's going on between me and her as for some reason since meeting she has been acting a bit different but a lot more happier.
Jake tries his hardest to show Emily that he loves her and that she means the world to him but it's hard to do as she seems to be guarding herself and her heart so no matter what he says she doesn't always believe him. Whilst Emily heads out on a road trip on new years, Jake becomes extremely worried as one day she completely ignores all his phone calls and messages but little does he realise that she didn't take her phone or purse with her that day as she was out with Max, her ex boyfriend. Once he finds that out he seems to grow more worried as he knows that whenever she is with Max she seems to go back to being really guarded and all, after she promises him that nothing is going to happen and that she is looking forward to seeing him in the morning he seems to feel a bit better.
As soon as he is finished speaking with her, Sarah ends up going to dinner with him and this is where he finds out more about how Emily and Max used to be and when Sarah tells him that the night they broke up Max was originally going to propose to her he slowly starts to change his opinion of him.
When he does finally see Emily the next morning he is in for a shock as when he gets to the Skyline all he sees is Max on one knee holding Emily's, and as Jake gets nearer he shouts her name to get her attention and to find out what is going on with Max. When Emily turns round and says that Max asked her to marry him, Jake can hardly believe what he's hearing and then things seem to get worse when Max turns round and says that she can have time to think about her answer. Jake honestly thought that both him and Emily were moving forward with their lives but now this has been added into the picture Jake seems unsure of what to think of Emily as even though he knows that she is his soulmate he can't help but think that maybe she isn't over Max at all.
Jake ends up walking away and going home as he can't handle what's just happened. Will he regret walking away from her or will it cost him everything. The only way to find out is by picking up this book, I fell in love with it from the start so I hope you guys feel the same way once you start as well.
