I’ve only read one of Carrie Aarons’ books before and from what I thought of that book, I honestly saw that she had talent when it came to writing, I was captivated by the story and the characters. So I was intrigued to see what would happen with this next book and honestly I have to say that it had such a different element to the first book I read. With this book, I was interested in the story and the characters, but I found myself taking longer to get it read, it just seemed that there was something missing which would have normally had me gripping to the story and devouring it in such record speeds as I’m a pretty fast reader. Don’t get me wrong, the writing and the plot was good, but this didn’t work for me as the other book I’d read did.
I also found that Savannah whilst having gone through a lot, she was a strong character at times, but that didn’t shine through as much as I would have liked. If anything, her time away from her childhood town made her seem really childish and bratty. I get why she ran away from everything she had only known 10 years ago, but the fact that now being back and her family and friends wanting to try and gain some type of connection with her and the only thing that she will do is avoid it or just scream and run away. If anything that made me think of her being a bit shallow, yes it is difficult to bring up, and yes we all have our own way of dealing with grief but the way she was handling things I just didn’t think was reasonable. I’ve been through a hell of a lot in my life, some things that no one should have to deal with and these were all at a young age, but I didn’t run away from it, instead I confronted what was happening and whilst it may have been difficult, I could see that there was a support network around me and that whilst I could take my time, I knew that when I was ready I could turn to the support that I needed.
I thought that Jason was a great character and he actually lived up to what I would hope in a character. Yes, he may have had his own issues back in the beginning, but even still he did everything he could to get Savannah to talk to him, he tried being gentle, he tried doing it her way, but he knew that deep down no one could move on or forward without addressing the elephant in the room.
Other than Savannah being a bit childish and bratty, I do think that overall Carrie did a great job, I can see that she is very talented and her writing does show that. I know that we all have our own opinions on things and that we’re not all going to like the same stuff, but at the end of the day just because I don’t think something worked or a character wasn’t to my liking, someone else out there will most likely think differently and that’s okay. I would recommend that you give this book a try and see what you think, as you may end up thinking different to what I thought, but it’s always best to find out for yourself, than to take someone else’s word.
It’s been 10 years since Savannah thought about her past, when she left Hale she honestly thought she could put it behind her, everything she knew, all her family and friends…. However, life doesn’t work that way, so when she’s trying to move on with her life, her future with her boyfriend and getting a penthouse that they’ve both had their eye on for a while, her whole past comes tumbling back into her life. In order to secure the penthouse she’s got to go back home to her old life and try to convince her ex-Jason to sell up the house that they bought together as it’s amounted into a huge mess… However, with Jason unwilling to sell, Savannah has no idea what to do, she’s desperate to get out of Hale and back home to New York, but after being there for a little while, things start to change and her vision of life is a little different. Will she be able to get Jason to change his mind about the house or will he give her a reason to see that him keeping it all this time was worth it??
