I’ve read all of the books that Brooke O’Brien has written and have loved every one of them, she is extremely talented, and you can see in her writing how much work and effort she puts into her stories. Some books aren’t easy for her, but some are and no matter how much they affect her she pours her heart into giving us the best stories that she can create.
This book wasn’t what I was expecting at all, but I loved how it developed, I honestly thought it was going to go one way, but just as I thought I was going to be right; Brooke threw in such a spanner that you wouldn’t have seen coming. You can tell that with each book she writes that she is always improving, and I love her determination for it.
No book is ever the same and I got such a different feel for this book than I did with all of her other books, I thought that Ryder was such an awesome character, and I would love to claim him in real life, but unfortunately that’s impossible. She did his character justice and the fact that both him and Austen met years ago and somehow managed to attend the same University is incredible because honestly when you grow up in foster homes, once you become an adult and go off on your own the chances of coming back together are quite slim.
I did like Austen too; she was such a great character, and I can understand the struggles that she had and was going through. It can’t have been easy, but both Ryder and Austen did what they had to do to survive, and I admire them for that.
I enjoyed the story and where it went, I thought the characters were well thought out and I was gripped until I got to the end.
I would recommend giving this a try because it’s so different from all of Brooke’s other work, but it’s quite addicting once you start it.
Austen first met Ryder back when she got put into Foster Care, she noticed he kept away from everyone, so when he did something so unlike him by coming into her room to make sure she was okay, she couldn’t believe the change in him and thought maybe they could be friends. However, that was all shattered the next morning and he went back to being quiet, kept to himself, but started making Austen’s life hell.
So when she’s now in her first year at University, the last person she expected to see was Ryder, she’s hoping that maybe the chip on his shoulder would have dissolved and that he knew how to be nice to people. Clearly, she is wrong thinking this because instead of him being welcoming towards her, he is flat out rude to her and attempts to make threats to keep her away from him.
Will Austen heed his threats or will she just keep doing what she always does??
What will happen when it becomes clear that someone knows about her secret identity? Will Ryder actually step up and help her or is it him that starts blackmailing her???
